Beer Battered Onion Rings

2 large white onions
2 Tablespoons white flour
1 1/4 (one and one-quarter) cups whole wheat pastry flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 (one-quarter) teaspoon salt
1 egg, beaten
1 cup beer
1 tablespoon oil

Slice onions into one-half-inch slices. Separate into rings and sprinkle lightly with white flour and set aside. In a large bowl combine flour, baking powder, salt, egg, beer and oil. Blend until smooth. Dip prepared onion rings into batter to coat well, fry in hot oil at 375 degrees until golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Yields four servings.
