New health guidelines suggest at least three of your six one-ounce servings of grains should be from whole grains. Three cups of air-popped popcorn is equivalent to a one-ounce serving of whole grains.
Popcorn is also high in dietary fiber by providing five percent daily value. Fiber slows digestion and makes you feel full for longer periods and also grabs onto unwanted toxins as it makes its way through the digestion system.
Air-popped popcorn contains only 30 calories per cup and even when drizzled lightly with butter contains only 90 to 120 calories per cup. Popcorn has no artificial additives or preservatives and is sugar free.
The National Cancer Institute, the American Dental Association and the American Dietetic Association suggest popcorn as a healthful and nutritious snack food to fit into any meal and fitness program.
Cheese-less Popcorn is my family’s favorite popcorn recipe. The secret ingredient is KAL Nutritional Yeast Flakes. One scoop adds 45 just calories and provides eight grams protein, a host of B vitamins, zinc and potassium. Purchase this brand at your local health food store and you will be hooked on the great flavor.
Popcorn Salts are great to have on hand for variety and great taste on any occasion.
